Grand Theft Auto VI arrives Nov. 19, and it’s going to need some room. The console version is a 210 GB download, according to a post from the PlayStation Game Size account that Kotaku reports and Insider Gaming says it can corroborate. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed the size, and a day-one patch would come on top of it.
That matters more in Canada than you might think. Buy the boxed copy here and you get a download code, not a disc, as we noted in our look at PlayStation’s year. One way or another, everyone is downloading it.
How long it’ll take
Here’s the best case at different internet speeds. Real downloads are usually slower, especially on launch night when millions of people hit the same servers.
| Your internet speed | Time to download 210 GB |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | about 46 hours and 40 minutes |
| 50 Mbps | about 9 hours and 20 minutes |
| 100 Mbps | about 4 hours and 40 minutes |
| 300 Mbps | about 1 hour and 33 minutes |
| 500 Mbps | about 56 minutes |
| 1 Gbps | about 28 minutes |
| 3 Gbps | about 9 minutes |
Our math: 210 gigabytes is 1,680 gigabits, divided by your speed. Internet speeds are sold in megabits, game sizes in gigabytes, and there are eight bits in a byte. That’s why the numbers are bigger than they look.
For context, 50 Mbps is the speed the CRTC treats as the baseline: its Broadband Fund pays to bring homes to at least 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. At that speed, GTA 6 takes most of a workday.
How to not be the one still downloading on Nov. 19
- Pre-load. The same post says pre-loading opens Nov. 12, a week early. Start it and walk away.
- Plug in. A wired Ethernet connection to the console is often faster and steadier than Wi-Fi.
- Clear some space first. If your console’s storage is nearly full, you’ll find out at the worst possible moment. Delete the games you finished in 2023.
- Check your data cap. On a capped plan, 210 GB plus patches could eat a good chunk of your month.
Why it’s worth your time: The biggest game of the year will be decided, for many Canadians, by their internet plan. Pre-load on Nov. 12, plug in a cable, and you’ll be in Vice City by midnight instead of watching a progress bar.
