Here’s what happened in tech yesterday.
1. Canada’s big publishers sue Anthropic

Why it matters: The global fights over training data and data-centre power bills are now playing out in Canada.
2. Tenstorrent raises $1.5 billion USD
Toronto-founded chip company Tenstorrent closed a $1.5-billion USD Series E (about $2.1 billion CAD) at a $6.2-billion USD valuation, BetaKit reports. Toronto is still its largest office, with about 200 of its 1,000 staff.
Why it matters: Toronto-founded and still Toronto-heavy, Tenstorrent is one of the few Canadian-rooted companies in a position to compete with Nvidia on AI chips.
3. Shopify’s CTO is stepping down
Mikhail Parakhin, who became Shopify’s chief technology officer in late 2024, is moving into an advisory role, BetaKit reports. Shopify hasn’t named a successor.
Why it matters: Parakhin led Shopify’s AI push. His replacement will shape where it goes next.
4. Apple sets a “Pro and Tell” event for October 28
Apple will hold an in-person event in Los Angeles on October 28 at 1 p.m. ET, iPhone in Canada reports. Rumours point to a MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen, M6 Macs and possibly an OLED iPad mini. None of it is confirmed.
Why it matters: A touchscreen Mac would be a big change. We’ll cover the event live.
